Meet Pastor James Brown
James Edward Brown, Sr. was born as a sharecropper’s son. His place of the nativity is Louisiana, the Pelican State, in the quaint, hinder part of the tall timbers city of Springhill. He holds fond memories of his family living there, as he is the eleventh of twelve children.
Upon completing high school he entered Southern University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and Economics. During his years at Southern, he sang in the concert choir and the Mount Carmel Baptist Church Choir in Scot-landville. James, as president of Southern University national alumni, transitioned the organization into the top three of the Historical Black College and University alumni organizations. James is also the impetus of the Southern University System Foundation's annual homecoming Multi-Million Dollar March which raised $12,000,000 in 2019.
During his 32-year tenure at Lilly Grove Baptist Church, he held the offices of Chairman of Trustees, Chairman of the Board of Deacons, Sunday School Teacher, organizer of Deacons Family Ministry, and Minister of Visitation and Pastoral Care. James was the co-leader of the Project Management teams that constructed the first Lilly Grove Baptist Church campus and construction of the 55,000 square foot Wendell Neal Family Life Center. Rev. Brown was called to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ in 1988 but accepted the call in 1996. On September 11, 1996, he preached his first sermon at the Lilly Grove Baptist Church of Houston, Texas under the leadership of his pastor, the Reverend Terry K. Anderson. He was ordained to the pastoral ministry by Reverend Anderson on August 30, 2001. Realizing that the call to preach is also a call to preparation, Rev. Brown entered Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary where he initiated his graduate studies. Those works were later completed at B. H. Carroll Theological Institute where he received the Master of Art in Religion degree. Rev. Brown has also completed further studies on Tracing the Footsteps of the Apostle Paul in Athens, Greece (region), studied Intentional Interim Ministry through the Baptist General Convention of Texas and the Five Year Bible Study at Bible Study Fellowship.
Rev. Brown has served as Moderator of the Southwest Central District Association of Texas. He has also served as an instructor at Trinity Evangelical Bible Seminary. He has lectured on the subjects of Deacon Family Ministry, Christian Heritage, Church Administration, Church and Community in Athens, Greece, Houston Metropolitan Baptist Ministers Conference, Southern University, and National Baptist Convention of America. Although Rev. Brown has received numerous awards, the glory of his life is found in his work as a preacher and pastor. He previously served as pastor of the Greater Barbour's Chapel Baptist Church in Texas City, Texas. During his tenure as Shepherd of the Flock, the Greater Barbour’s Church Chapel family was moved from its’ 92 years old location at 801 Martin Luther King Street and built a new 25,000-square-foot church campus located at 7420 FM1765 Road in Texas City, Texas. The new church has a seating capacity of 700 in the sanctuary, 30 classrooms, and a 500-seat fellowship and banquet hall. The Church grew from 238 to over 900. He has licensed and ordained several preachers into the Gospel ministry, many of whom are actively serving in full-time ministry throughout the nation. Being committed to pursuing well done, Rev. Brown serves as Intentional Interim Minister and is a member of Lilly Grove Baptist Church (Rev. Terry Anderson, Pastor), Chairman of The Browns Group-Christian Leadership Training and Scholars Fund. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Southern University System Foundation, is an advisor to the Southern University Alumni Federation, is president of the Charles H. Brown High School Alumni Foundation and is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Rev. Brown is married to Betty Haynes Brown; together they are the proud parents of two children: James, Jr. (Kimberly) and Jason (Deadrian), and the Big Poppa to Jeremiah, Joseph, Jaidyn, and Chandler. “I am extremely humbled, and elated that God has entrusted me to Pastor Seven Star Baptist Church!!! To God be the glory for the things He has done and the things He will do! This historic church has been doing God’s work for 123 years prior to my arrival, and I look forward to all that God is going to do through us, and for us in the years to come! Selah and Do You See What I See?”
